"After being told you cannot make reservations on the weekend I turned up to find there were in fact tables reserved but what was more worrying is my group of 4 was told we would have to wait for a table when there were 2 small tables together which would have seated us comfortably (not reserved). We were told they wanted to keep it so they could use as 2 tables of 2 so when we asked if we could seat as 2 couples we were again declined.

Needless to say we were appalled and left."

"It's decent, I like their 'no-bookings' policy but for food and atmosphere I prefer El Rincon Latino just down the road. However if you want a quieter meal this may be the place."

"Some friends took me to Carmen last night. I am a Spaniard living in London and the minute I stepped in I felt like at home.
This place captures the true ambience of a bar de tapas. Why ? the menu has unpretentious but excellent tapas choice, good value and bet you, this place sells the coldest mahou beer in town!"

"This is by far the best Tappas Bar in South London.
The food is fabulous and very resonably priced, the service is impeccable and it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. This place has no pretence about it like so many other restaurants in Clapham.

I strongly recommend Tapas lovers to go here."

"I have never suffered such slander. (see below) It's always the quite ones. She hardly uttered a word the whole evening. You wouldn't blame me for drinking heavily if you could see her face. The only redeeming factor of the evening was the delicious food (which she ate like a gannet) and the refreshing breeze that carried away the stink of her cheap perfume. "

"We were indeed seated promptly (I was Phil's dinner date, please see below). There was a slight confusion about our reservation but nothing to provoke the aggressive tone that Phil decided to inflict upon the waiter. Nevertheless we sat and ordered a medium sangria which was delicious (unfortunately Phil decided to drink entire jug in 5 minutes thus fuelling his behaviour).

The food was very reasonably priced (luckily as I was left to pay the entire bill) and very good. I would recommend the sardines which I thoroughly enjoyed until Phil threw one at the very pleasant ladies sat at the table beside us. The atmosphere was relaxed and there was a very refreshing breeze that was much appreciated and helped to take away the revolting smell of alcohol coming from Phil's breath.

I will be returning to Carmens again but certainly not with Phil. He was the most offensive dinner date I have ever suffered."

"We were seated promptly. I recommend you book as the waiter had tried to throw us out not believing we could use a telephone. This is fully understandable from the look of us and he turned out to be a friendly and charming racist. We ordered the largest quantity of Sangria that they sold. The waiter, proving himself once again to be a poor judge of character, advised against this quantity not spotting us for the alcoholics we are. He redeemed himself however when we ordered our food advising us not to buy more than five dishes almost exactly the right amount, YUM. Our table was situated in a refreshing breeze that carried away the odour of our copious cigarettes to more distant tables. The only disadvantage was that it was a little close to our fellow diners some of which dared to talk to us; I threw them a sardine and this served to entertain them."

"This place is just amazing. I´ve been poping in for years. Better during the week than on w/ends (too busy). The service is quick and efficient, food is so tasty it can´t be compared with any other place´s in Clapham.

Deco is cosy and real spanish indeed. The place is very clean all over and waitresses are gorgeous. And even the music helps you having a great evening in there. And for the best end: the show is low priced!!

I´m spanish born and believe me, I feel homy there.
Absolutely recommended!!! Have fun there!!"

"Surprising as it may seem Carmen really isn't that special at all. Sandwiched between a row of fantastic restaurants, my expectations were pretty high of this little tapas bar that always looks packed and buzzing. So when my companion and I asked for a table for two (without a reservation on a Friday night) we thought ourselves pretty lucky to get in.

Apart from being sat next to the door where every couple of a minutes another group of dinners would be turned away from eating, letting in the most annoying breeze, we found the service friendly and efficient. However the disappointment came in the food. The obligatory bowl of tapas olives was a definite letdown. I guess I've just come to expect flavours like garlic and chilli in my olives and perhaps a little bit of oil, but any flavour at all would be a bonus. Amazingly - and this is very rare indeed for me- my companion and I didn't finish the olives we'd been served.

So onto the rest of the meal, which was better but still only just adequate. First up we had the croquettes stuffed with blue cheese and served with a tangy salsa - the salsa being a definite highlight of the meal. Our deep fried white bait was satisfactory, if not a little soft. Our salad of artichoke, egg, tuna and "olives" was pretty bland and as for the chorizo sausage - like olives, normally one of my favourite dishes - well, there just wasn't enough sauce or even flavour (for really lush chorizo you should try Fictions on Northcote Road). The sausage also got cold really quickly, which was probably down to the wind blowing through the door and onto my back.

The rest of the m better - beef aneal was slightlyd roasted pepper topped with cheese and aubergine again served with cheese compensated for some of the earlier blandness. So don't go to Carmen if you expect food of the quality of nearby Metro or say, The Red Pepper, but as for the cost -£32 for two - it certainly won't break the bank."
